Living with Bipolar 1 Disorder

My life took a turn when I had my first psychotic episode, leading to my diagnosis of Bipolar 1 Disorder…

What is it Like Living with Bipolar 1?

After my first episode, my life changed. I could no longer go to school, work, or socialize. My existence became numbing, boring, and dull. I discovered the quietness of life. I remember the comfort of my bed, day in and day out.

Fast forward, 4 years later, and I am married with a 2 year old daughter. I never thought all these positives would happen in my life after being diagnosed with Bipolar 1. To sum up the reality of my life, would be to describe it as imperfect perfection. Yes, I have my bad days, but there are also times when there is thrill and excitement!

Being stabilized on medications has been a lifesaver. I would not be where I am today without the consistent use of my medications to help treat the highs and lows that come along with having Bipolar 1.

How Did My Diagnosis Change Me?

My diagnosis of Bipolar 1 changed me in many ways. I once loved the sport of basketball, socializing, learning, and taking on new challenges. I would say that people diagnosed with bipolar have a certain stigma attached to them. That our moods are constantly up and down, but my reality is much different. I used to love all those things I mentioned above, but I now have a new perspective on life and the way that I think.

I am different because I know myself much better than before I was diagnosed with Bipolar 1. I know my triggers (what does and doesn’t make my brain tick) very well now, thanks to countless psychiatrists, psychologists, and therapist appointments. I know you probably thought I was going to talk about the negative aspect of having bipolar, but I wanted to speak my truth and what I go through on a daily basis.

Each year since my diagnosis has been different and changed me in many ways. Each year, I learn more and more about myself and the realization that I am still a human and that everyone has their flaws. Having Bipolar 1 does not define who I am.
